What is a light meter?

There are some scenarios which tend to have complex amounts and levels of lights. It is where the modes of metering come in. they include:

  • Matrix metering: It is where the camera looks at the light in the whole scene and ensures that it averaged.
  • Center weighted metering: The camera is able to look at the camera the entire scene, averaging it while an emphasis is placed onto the center.
  • Sport metering: It is where the light is measured by the camera only in small areas that are around the central autofocus point.
  • Partial metering: The camera is able to measure the light only in small areas of the frame center. A bit larger as compared to the spot meter.

Each mode of metering looks at the scene differently. And the camera is able to make its evaluation basing on them. Being able to figure the metering mode that is essential for your scene is necessary. You will be able to find it quite complicated in getting the exposure you want. The light meters started out as simple handheld devices which were standalone for the film photography.

Studio photographers still utilize them up to date. It makes it possible in ensuring the capture they make has the right exposures. It is a good way of finding out where the point that is hottest of the subject lies.  Especially when dealing with studio lighting situations that happen to be complex.

Types of lighting metering

Most of the modern cameras utilize the TTL metering. It stands for the through the lens. A light meter is different because it can be able to move it around and it its main purpose is for measuring the light. There happen to be two type of light metering which have a hand held lighter meter to detect. One is looking that the reflective light and the other is looking at the incident light.

Incident light meter

The incident light meter is one that read the light amount which is falling on the subject. It can be natural light, coming from the sun or the artificial light like a strobe or a flash. You will have to hold the light meter in between the intended subject and the source of light and it has to be close to the subject as it can.

The white dome that is on the device is what will be able to pick up the light reading. By being able to meter in this manner, you will end up disregarding the way dark or light your object seems to be. It helps in getting rid of the errors that are caused by lighting a subject from its behind. It is the type of metering that is not capable of a light meter for in-camera
